Each ART FORM has its own set of 'building blocks' that are used to 'build' the art. We may refer to these building blocks as conventions, or elements, or devices. Below you will find the building blocks for Visual Art, the Short Story, Poetry, Music, Dance, and Drama.
The Elements of Dance are the foundational concepts and vocabulary that help students develop movement skills and understand dance as an artistic practice.
The acronym BEAST helps students remember the elements: Body Energy Action Space Time |
This framework is a way to discuss any kind of movement. While different dance styles call for specialized skills and stylization choices, these underlying elements of dance are visible in all dance experiences. CLICK HERE for an additional

Look through the gallery below. See if you can determine how each element was used the the particular dance. How is energy shown? What levels of space are used (high, medium, low)? What about body, time and relationships?
Elements of Dance Application
Instructions are also in Google Classroom
- Go to your Google Classroom and open your Elements of Music Application Assignments (Slides)
- Use the bank of photos on the class webpage above
- Find THREE that share a common ‘feeling’ and paste into the Google Slide Presentation on individual slides
- Write a claim (make sure it is NOT a claim we used in class) on the title page
- For example: “These three images convey a sense of …”
- Support that claim with THREE pieces of evidence for EACH photo (evidence should come from the elements of dance) next to the photo
- Using YOUR OWN BODY, create TWO original dance photos that are similar in ‘feeling’ to the ones you chose above. (ie, make sure they fit the claim)
- Put this work together - Claim, 5 photos total, and your evidence - into a short VIDEO ( ***consider using Adobe Spark***)
- *Add music that fits the ‘feeling’ you identified in your claim
